Holiday Mind-Body Boot Camp, Part 1 of 3:
Stress Starts Here! Simple Ways to Lay the Foundation for a Peaceful, Productive, & Healthy Holiday

December 6
Host: Terri Trespicio
Expert guest: Kate Hanley

Once the holiday season descends, we tend to toss all the basics of healthy living out the window: nutrition, sleep, exercise, you name it—if it’s good for us, we probably don’t have time for it. And while you can certainly muscle through the next month, as you have many times before, you risk landing on the other side of it all feeling physically and spiritually exhausted—even sick.

In Part 1 of this 3-part series, we’ll start with the basic building blocks of stress reduction that will give you practical, effective ways to change the way you respond to and metabolize stress, so that you can rise to the occasion—not crawl to the finish line.

With help from stress expert Kate Hanley, author of the Anywhere, Anytime Chill Guide and founder of msmindbody.com, you’ll get a crash course in breathwork, daily practices to keep you grounded and energized, cognitive stress reduction techniques to take with you, and even some restorative yoga poses that are safe for anyone to try.

Holiday Mind-Body Boot Camp, Part 2 of 3:
It’s All Relative: How to Manage Expectations and Find Peace at the Family Table

December 13, 2011
Host: Terri Trespicio
Expert Guest: Dale Atkins, PhD

You’ve put some new practices into action and are feeling optimistic—and then, the phone rings. Your sister-in-law is manhandling the holiday plans. Your mother says something that hits a nerve. And let’s not get started on the kids.

Holidays aren’t just stressful because of the unrelenting schedules; it’s the recurring tensions that rear their heads in the context of family this time of year. And by family we mean any and all of that inner circle of folks, who, blood-related or not, take up mental and physical real estate in your life, head, and possibly spare bedroom during the holidays.

One thing’s for sure: The people you spend this time with are not going to be all that different now than they were last year—but you can be. In Part 2 of this 3-part series, we’ll focus on how to manage expectations and emotions, keep the peace, cope with guilt and deescalate tension—both preemptively and in the moment. You’ll walk away with a new outlook and a fresh set of skills for coping with and, most importantly, enjoying time with your family.

Expert guest: Dale Atkins, PhD
Dale V. Atkins, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist who has more than twenty-five years of experience as a relationship expert, focusing on families, couples, parenting, aging well, managing stress and maintaining balance in one's life. Guilt-Free Feast: The Secret to Healthy Holiday Eating Without Dieting or Restriction

December 20, 2011
Host: Terri Trespicio
Expert Guest: Cynthia Sass, R.D.

You’ve learned how to keep your wits about you at the mall and stay calm in the face of family squabbles. That leaves us with another major holiday challenge to grapple with and explore: Food. This is, after all, a time of year centered squarely on eating—and eating a lot. Chances are you find yourself caught once again in the endless wrestling match between mind and belly.

In this third and final installment of the Holiday Mind-Body Boot Camp series, we’ll talk with registered dietitian Cynthia Sass, author of Cinch!: Conquer Cravings, Drop Pounds, and Lose Inches, about how to embrace the best part of holiday feasting—without guilt, regret, or restriction. We’ll discuss how to tell the difference between hunger and cravings (how to nourish one while undermining the other), cope with meal-time peer pressure, stave off weight gain, and use mindfulness techniques to change the way you relate to and enjoy food—now and all year round.

Expert Bio: Cynthia Sass is an award winning registered dietitian with master’s degrees in both nutrition science and public health.
